There is a McDonalds commercial on the raido right now where a lady is explaining all the people she runs into every morning at her McDonalds. At first you think she is talking about actual friends, but really she is just recognizing these people by the breakfasts they have... 'hot cake lady', 'coffee with two creams and three sugars guy', 'sausage mcmuffin man', etc...
It reminds me of the random cast of characters I see on a daily (or mostly daily) basis. These are people, or things, that I don't know by actual name yet I have subconsciously named them by the quirky thing that makes them stand out. I am sure we all have these folks around us that fit into this category, right?
Dancing Man with Little Dog:
This guy has been around for years. It will be awhile between sightings, but he always seems to show up and make me smile. He wears very large headphones and makes his way around the block as if he were taking a walk, however he is DANCING the WHOLE time. Add to that the sweet little unleashed brown dog that follows him around and they are hard to miss. It is one of those situations where you are left wondering as you drive by... what is this man listening to?
Dressed Lion Statues
These 'characters' aren't actual people, but they fit the bill never the less. There is a house that we drive by daily that has two white lion statues out in front... like small pillars. They are identical statues and stand about 3.5 feet high - which in and of themselevs isn't all that spectacular, however the home owners dress them up in outfits partaining to the season of year. Like in March they have leprechaun hats and carry pots of gold. At Christmas they wear Santa suits... you get the idea.
They are so much a part of our life that one day we drove by and Hannah must have been looking down or something, but she all of a sudden was very concerned. "Mom!!! The Lions are GONE, someone TOOK them!!!" Thankfully, she was just looking at the wrong house, but it made me realize the impact of the things we look at everyday and how much we kind -of look forward to seeing them. The lions are definitely a part of our 'cast of characters'.
Scooter Guy
I'm not knocking it, because I do it too... but this guy does it every morning. His kids ride the scooter to school, and he rides it back home. The thing is that it isn't a razor scooter, it is a large skateboard sized scooter and he does it EVERY morning... even in the cold. My morning kindergarten drop-off would not be complete without Scooter Guy. I guage how late or early I must be around where I see Scooter Guy. If he is already headed back home, I must be late. If he is headed into the school, then I am pretty early. I hope Scooter Guy's kids aren't old enough to go to school by themselves next year, he really does make me smile.
So, this is my current Cast of Characters. I reserve the right to add to thi s list as I see fit. Do you have a cast of characters?

I am laughing so hard right now because I completely know Dancing Man and Dresses Up Lion Statues. I actually normally see Dancing Man, on Temperance, near the Dressed Up Lions. Yes, he makes me laugh every time, too. I also secretly wish that I had enough guts to do it...becuase you know that he is getting a great work-out and having a blast listening to his tunes!
Katie and I each had the wide skateboard/scooter Scooter growing up. It was tons of fun, but our dad never rode it in my recollection...lol:)
